Off to a Bumpy Start

Hello! Welcome back crew!

In the past week we have been exploring the plant Digita and its natives. During our exploration we have determined that referring to all citizens of the same age group as natives is not always accurate. This is because not all members of their society have developed the same skill set. Some are from impoverished areas of the planet where they lack access to the developing technology. Because of this, there are older members on the planet who have a better understanding of these new technologies. There are even visitors from other planets who fully understand the new technology. Just because an age group has more access to technology than previous generations does not always mean that they are going to have the opportunity to learn about it.

In other news, we have also just begun exploring the galaxy known simply as ISTE. The standards of this galaxy are high, but they are not very strict. The governing body wants to ensure that all who are living within their galaxy are given the proper skill set to understand the technology around them. There are many standards listed for both students and educators to promote this understanding. Of the 7 standards for educators I believe I have already begun to accomplish the first, which is known as learner. I already have developed the ability to use technology to my advantage in order to complete my goals and other necessary objectives. For example, I am capable of researching the effects of technology in the classroom to better inform the way I implement technology in my future classroom. The one standard that I am simultaneously excited and nervous for is the designer standard. I have limited experience of using technology to help with teaching given that I have limited experience with teaching. I recognize that this skill will be very important to my future career so I am very interested in learning more about it, I just have no idea where to begin. Once I have a better understanding of what works to teach students, such as the effectiveness of playing jeopardy for review, then I will be able to better implement this standard into my future career.

Lastly, I will leave you all with a question that will lead us into next week. What influences teachers and students to use technology in the classroom? Some believe that the classroom is intended to be a reflection of the world around us so technology needs to be a part of the classroom to help students properly understand their world. Others believe that technology is a sort of shortcut for teachers. It helps make their job easier and faster. While I agree with both of these views I think there is more to it. I believe that there is also a societal push for technology to be implemented in the classroom because it does have educational properties and parents want the best for their children. Of course, I do not have all the answers. We will have to wait and see where our journey leads us for this answer.

Thank you for keeping up to date. Until next time, this is your captain signing off!

  1. I agree that the designer standard is a complex one. It is dependent on various components regarding the teacher and student. However, I think it is one of the most important in the teacher-student relationship. Also, I really love the consistency of your theme. Very fun and creative!
