Technology Updates

To begin for this week, we will look at examples of other captains and the way they leave information for the families of their crew. This information is often maintained through webpages set up by schools in order for parents to access resources related to their students learning. Often, it would seem that the only information available to the public is contact information for the teacher although some have photos or quotes related to themselves. In the case of the example, the grades taught at this particular school have a wide range. Dr. Puglia, for example, teaches a technology class for grades 4 through 8.

On the subject of technology being taught, it is important that I begin to determine how I will implement technology in my life to better help my career as an educator. I think a large way that I will use technology will be towards planning. I need to be up-to-date with events and other important reminders if I want to be able to focus on my classroom and other responsibilities. I also would like to make use of a website in order to keep the families of students up to date. I intend to make use of diigo in the future as well because I really like the ability to take notes online. I feel like it will help me organize information that I can use. 

Lastly, lets have a discussion about the Technology Sandbox we visited earlier this week. We were able to explore new technologies that have the potential to be implemented in the classroom. One of my favorite technologies we got to play with was Virtual Reality. While it was really fun to use, I have trouble seeing any good way for it to be put into the classroom. We talked about how it is a very expensive technology that can only really be used by one person at a time. Augmented reality, on the other hand, has the potential to be useful to a wide array of students and would be great for group projects in a science class. An example that we discussed on our field trip was to help with understanding the solar system and the human body. Another technology that could be useful in the classroom is the advanced smart board. It can be moved to suit a very wide range of students and it also allows for 4 groups of people to use it at once. This can be very useful for team building activities in a variety of subjects.
